How to Tell If a Fur Coat Is Real

Buying vintage fur online can feel tricky if you are not sure whether a coat is real or fake. Here are a few simple checks that anyone can do at home.

1. Feel the fur

Real fur is soft and silky and springs back when you stroke it. Fake fur often feels coarser and tends to stay flat.

2. Look at the base

Part the hairs and look at the backing. Real fur grows from a leather or suede skin. Fake fur is stitched onto a woven fabric base where you can see the threads.

3. The tip test

Real hairs taper to a fine point at the end. Fake fur hairs are usually the same thickness from base to tip and can look blunt.

4. Warmth

Real fur is a natural insulator and feels warm quickly against the skin. Fake fur can feel cool and slightly plasticky.

At Vintage Fur Mania every coat is genuine real fur, hand selected and described honestly, with clear measurements in centimetres and inches. If you ever have a question about a piece, message us before you buy.
